Helicopter Emergency Egress Device (HEED)
The HEED is a small self-contained breathing tank. It holds about 2 - 5 minutes of breathing air. Training is required to insure:
- Reliable use in emergency situation
- Conservation of air
- Underwater clearing to prevent water ingestion
- Realistic use timeline
- Limitations of design
- Avoiding an aeroembolism
HEED training normally requires 1/2 day of classroom training with 1/2 day pool "work". There are several different "generations" in-use; each with their own characteristics.
NOTE: This device is not mandatory for flight, but the training is required prior to issue or if a HEED is to be carried during a NOAA mission. The required training is waived for those personnel who hold a current PADI open water certification or who have had documented NOAA or Navy Dive Training.
