As NOAA prepares to expand its aircraft fleet, a new flight path has been established to ensure there are highly qualified aviators in each flight station. The NOAA Cooperative Aviation Centers (NCAC) are an innovative partnership established between the NOAA Corps and select, accredited aviation universities across the nation. This collaboration is uniquely designed to address NOAA’s growing need for highly skilled aviation professionals.
The centers will actively develop and cultivate the next generation of NOAA aviators, combining rigorous academic study with practical, mission-driven experience. Participating students will experience unparalleled opportunities that include comprehensive flight training, leadership development and direct mission experience. They will be integrated into real-world NOAA flight operations and scientific missions, giving them firsthand experience in aerial scientific data collection, hurricane reconnaissance, and maritime survey. This direct exposure ensures their training is directly relevant to NOAA's science and service mission.
Up to three universities will initially be selected to participate in this program, and will be announced by the end of September 2026. Students who are enrolled in participating universities and are interested in participating in the NCAC program are encouraged to apply in the spring of their sophomore year. If accepted, they will begin the program in the Fall of their junior year. They will be paired with an experienced NOAA Corps aviator who will provide guidance, support and insight into the daily operations and challenges of a NOAA aviator. Prior to senior year, participants will have a fully-funded, 10-week internship at the NOAA Aircraft Operations Center in Lakeland, Florida, which may count towards college credit for the student’s degree program. After graduation and successful completion of the program, participants will be highly competitive for selection to become a NOAA Corps aviator and will be eligible for a retention bonus of $25,000 a year for a 5-year service commitment, underscoring NOAA's commitment to retaining highly skilled aviation professionals.
We will begin accepting student applications to the NOAA Cooperative Aviation Center in Spring 2027. In the meantime, learn more here.
