NOAA aircraft, ship study "rivers in the sky"
NOAA heavy aircraft N43RF (Lockheed WP-3D Orion) and N49RF (Gulfstream IV-SP) and NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown safely and successfully supported the multi-agency, multi-platform CalWater 2015 project. In all, the aircraft conducted 27 flights and launched more than 440 probes off the West Coast. On the sea below, Ronald H. Brown released 176 instrument-carrying balloons to study the interaction between the ocean and atmosphere. The ship spent 14 days holding station while the atmospheric river events moved across their position.
