Maintaining Your Diving Equipment

To prolong the life of your diving equipment there is one thing you can do that will make a huge difference: rinse it with freshwater!

Dissolved salt in seawater will corrode diving equipment, reducing its service life and even causing the equipment to not function properly, which is why it is so important to rinse your gear at the end of every dive with freshwater. When rinsing your equipment, special care should be taken to insure that the dust cap is in place and the purge on the second stage is not pressed. Leaving the dust cap off or pressing the purge button will allow water to enter the inside of the regulator, causing corrosion and potentially causing the regulator to malfunction (read more about the importance of dust caps here). If a rinse tank is used, the freshwater in the tank should be replaced after every use to get rid of the newly introduced saltwater.

Remember: your diving equipment is what keeps you alive in the water. If you treat it right it will function when you need it… but if you don’t treat it right… it could fail on you when you need it the most.

Above is a photo of what can happen when you don’t rinse your equipment: it will corrode! This first stage has been compromised by poor maintenance. Failing to rinse equipment is unsafe and adds unnecessary costs.
