Hearing Conservation Program
Some employees are required to work in spaces with noise levels that exceed the safety threshold established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Employers are required to identify spaces that exceed noise levels and to provide hearing protection, hearing conservation training, and periodic hearing tests to detect changes in employee hearing. The Marine Medicine Branch (MMB) performs a screening audiogram with each employment physical exam. The MMB will notify an employee when changes in hearing that could be attributed to noise exposure are detected. Employees can contact the MMB to request a copy of the hearing tests in their employment medical file.
