Job Duties

Hydrographic Chief Survey Technician serves on a ship, 29 foot survey launch, small boat, and/or field party engaged in oceanographic or survey operations, performing activities including: Configure, operate and troubleshoot multibeam sonars, singlebeam sonars, side-scan-sonars, Moving Vessel Profilers (MVP), and attitude and positioning systems; Annotate records and record data using the above mentioned equipment; Manage staging and set-up during preparations for and at the completion of oceanographic and survey operations, such as tide gauge installations, horizontal control equipment installations or sound velocity measurements;  Manage, in conjunction with ship command, the preparation, installation, deployment and recovery of oceanographic and/or survey equipment and instruments; Process oceanographic and/or survey data; Write and/or review descriptive reports and data acquisition and processing reports; Create, maintain, and implement departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); Review safety practices and conditions in the department and onboard the ship, and recommend appropriate improvements; Manage survey department personnel; Manage hydrographic survey projects with Operations Officer(s) for quality and timeliness; Participate in required emergency drills and operations and serve as ”Person in charge” as needed; Perform other mission related duties as assigned, including duties related to the safety of the vessel and personnel.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  1. Applicant must be a United States citizen of at least 18 years of age.

  2. Must have One (1) years of experience at the Hydrographic Senior Survey Technician level or equivalent work engaged in the hydrographic field and Four (4) years of experience in a survey related field including: hydrography, oceanographic research, or other related field. Experience may include work in a survey related field, including land surveying, hydrology, oceanographic research, or similar related field.

  3. Applicant must meet physical requirements prior to appointment.

  4. Applicant must pass drug testing prior to appointment.

  5. Applicant must be able to obtain and hold a US Passport.

  6. Must meet Federal suitability standards.

  7. Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable (www.sss.gov).

Conditions of Employment

As a conditional of employment, your position will be a Mixed Tour position. Mixed Tour of duty is a combination of full time, part time and intermittent work schedules which allows the best utilization of resources based on the work requirements of the organization. You will be required to sign a Mixed Tour Agreement.

Once selected, you may be sent to any vessel nationwide. There is no guarantee that you will be assigned to any particular vessel or geographic location, however, your duty location will be determined by your home of record or ship’s home port. Duty locations are Norfolk, VA; Charleston, SC; Woods Hole, MA; Pascagoula, MS; Newport, OR; Kodiak, AK; Ketchikan, AK; San Diego, CA; Honolulu, HI; Davisville, RI; New Castle, NH.

A one year Trial period may be required.

Appointment to a Testing Designated Position.

Applicants who meet the Minimum Eligibility Requirements described above will be further evaluated. Documented knowledge, skills, and abilities along with experience, education, training, and awards contained in the application package and resume will be reviewed and rated to determine

The Knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) are as follows:

  1. Knowledge of software systems, such as HYPACK, Triton ISIS, MapInfo, ArcInfo, ArcView or Caris.

  2. Ability to operate any of the following types of hydrographic equipment: Recording echo sounder, side scan sonar, multi-beam sonar, recording CTD.

  3. Skill in computer, oral, and written communication.
