Two NOAA ships deployed to Caribbean to map coral reefs, explore deep sea
From March 28-April 7, NOAA Ship Nancy Foster supported a National Ocean Service research expedition in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The team used multibeam sonar, a scientific echosounder, an underwater glider, a remotely operated vehicle, and other high-tech tools to explore, study, and map coral reefs and fish spawning grounds. NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer has also been in the Caribbean, exploring largely uncharted deep-sea ecosystems and seafloor off Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
